XP NOT SHUTTING DOWN

Help....At shutdown, my system goes through the motions to the final screen.
WINDOWS IS SHUTTING DOWN, then just hangs....WONT SHUT DOWN...was
intermittent, now becoming more regular...Carried out Spyware and virus
checks and regularly run Windows Updates....SP2 installed...Having this
problem for the last few weeks...Can anyone help please
