XP not recognizing ANY modems

I have a computer here that XP refuses to recogize modems (as in, no
"new hardware found" messages pop up or default driver installed).

I've tried an entirely different chipset modem (first was a USR) and
same result, XP basically is oblivious to it's existence.

As a test, I reloaded XP on another hard drive and everything worked
fine with the modem. So whatever it is, it's something borked in the
current install of XP. Anyone have any ideas? FYI no modem software
was ever installed, so there is nothing to uninstall. My guess is, as
usual, something has been messed up in the registry.

Open device manager, select to show hidden devices. Delete
all modems. Be sure the modem is an XP compatible modem.

No modems are listed. The two modems are brand spanking new, so I
know they are XP compatible. They are definately XP compatible,
becasue like I said, I reloaded on a seperate hard drive and the modem
was indentified correctly.

Sounds like the hardware is not being detected by the motherboard.
Have you tried it in a different PCI slot? Have you checked the BIOS
Plug and Play settings? Normally they should be set to Auto. Check the
MB manual/docs to be sure.

That's not the problem. Otherwise my Windows reload on the different
harddrive would've had the same issue. Modem works fine with a
complete reload. I'm am just trying to avoid that.

So given what you have already identified in your postings...wouldn't you
think that perhaps your first version of XP is corrupt?

Try a repair installation to fix the problem.
