XP not recognising Toshiba DVD ROM

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8200 with a Toshiba SD-C2402 DVD ROM drive. The
original DVD ROM worked perfectly until the slide tray broke. I bought 2
second hand drives and both are recognised by DOS and XP only after I
unplug/plug them.

I have flashed the bios for the Tecra to the latest. I have flashed the
bios for the drives to the same version (1009 & 1015), just in case.

Before I take a chance and try a different bios for the drive (and realising
I could make it unusable!), has anyone any ideas how to solve this minor
irritation.

Aardvark, found the following scrounging round Google groups. Not the same
problem but there may be some clues in there as to your problem!

I have the same problem with reading DVD+RW disks on my
Compaq M700 Laptop with the Toshiba dvd drive.
Microsoft knowledge base article 818733 addresses this
issue. you need to get a special modified Udsf.sys file
from microsoft to fix this problem. Its not released for
general use so you must go thru Microsoft tech support to
get it.
