xp networking

my IT company set up a windows XP network with 5 workstations. one other
computer has vista as its operating system and IT says it can't be networked
with the other computers. Is this true? And if so, how do I un-install
vista and install XP without losing all my data? Or is there another
solution? Thanks.

I am not privy to your configuration; however, I have several WinXP
Pro, one WinXP Home, two Vista and one FreeBSD computers all networked
together. Most of the time they get along just fine.

The second set of "IT" people are incorrect. You can utilize a Windows XP
machine with Windows Vista machines and vice-versa. Now they may not *wish*
to - and that is their right, as it is easier/best for IT to keep as
homogeneous of a computing environment as plausible at all times - but it is
not a 'cannot be technically done' issue.

As for your latter questions - going from Windows Vista to Windows XP has
several 'risks'. First - anything you do not have the installation
media/proof of purchase/way to install it again/product key for and/or just
won't work on Windows XP for whatever reason will be lost. Second -
anything of yours (bookmarks/favorites, email, contacts, documents,
pitcures, music, etc) you do not backup and later restore will be lost.
Third - if the manufacturer of the product (the computer and its components)
no longer or never did have drivers for the hardware in the computer for
Windows XP - you may not be able to downgrade successfully anyway.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 will utilize the network resources of a Windows
XP 'network' just fine.

No, it's noit true, at all.

You need to find a real IT support company.; rthe one you've been using
is grossly inept.
