windows xp networking

my IT company set up a windows XP network with 5 workstations. one other
computer has vista as its operating system and IT says it can't be networked
with the other computers. Is this true? And if so, how do I un-install
vista and install XP without losing all my data? Or is there another
solution? Thanks.

You should be able to setup network between Vista and XP. This search result

Unless there is some specific reason that was configured deliberately, you
got a misleading information.
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

Its possible to have network within XP and vista you need to configure small network TCP/IP host things in Vista .. You can upgrade from XP TO vista not from vista to xp when you upgrade from xp to vista you can save your data bY just upgrading.

capable to talk one to the other when configured correctly.
