Hello all
I want to network two XP home computers together using a switch (not a
router)
These machines will not access the internet. Is this a proper setup?

Better would be input to router with both systems connected to the router.
Why are you insisting on a switch?

I am not insisting, then perhaps I don't understand the use
of a switch. Would a switch plug into a router to allow
more connections? Like an extension cord?

Hi
No Internet Sharing, and Only two computers! Use crossover cable No need
for switch. http://www.ezlan.net/direct.html
More than two Use Switch.
However for few $$$ more you can get a Wireless Cable/DSL Router.
Even without Internet, it would provide you with a capacity to connect 4
wired computers and additional Wireless computers, and the DHCP server makes
it easy to maintain the Network.
I do not know how much you would pay for a Switch, but am humble Wireless
Cable/DSL Router can be found for $4.99 after rebate.

Just to elaborate slightly on Jack's advice: the reason he suggests a
router is that most home wireless routers INCLUDE a 4-port switch. So,
if you really can find a wireless router for $4.99, you'll get a switch
that you can use with your 2 computers; room to add 2 more; the
capability to add wireless connections to your local network; and, if
you ever want it, the ability to connect to a cable or DSL modem to
share Internet service among your LAN. Just turn off the wireless if
you're not using it.
