XP Media Center hangs during boot

I'm using an HP Media Center m370n with Media Center 2003 installed. I
updated the TV tuner driver last night, and now when I start Windows it
hangs on the status bar screen. I can get into safe mode, so I've
tried System Restore (no go - would not restore), and every startup
permutaion in msconfig that I could think of. I also tried rolling
back the driver - that didn't help either. I'm at a loss. Any ideas?
I'm desperately trying to avoid doing a system recovery.
