i have media center edition v 2005 which i bought as an OEM pack along with a
barebones system. the software comes on 2 CD's and includes a 3rd CD labeled
"updates for version 2005" which contains just one file:

WindowsXPMediaCenter2005-KB900325-usa.exe

the problem is i can't get a clean install. i install off the two-CD set and
at some point it asks me to insert Windows XP Professional SP2 (which didn't
come with it!). I tried the "updates" CD but that's not it of course. I tried
canceling to ignore, and the install seemed to in fact complete - but i'm
convinced there are pieces of the OS that don't get loaded or configured when
you do that. things are flaky. I can't even get the internet connection to
work properly so therefore i can't run windows update properly. Is there a
way to get access to the CD image for the SP2 update so I can burn one and
complete the install properly? (microsoft will send me one if I'm willing to
wait "4 to 6 weeks").

The prompt to insert "Windows XP Professional SP2 disc" is one where you
insert Disc1 of your MCE2005 set (cuz essentially that is what it is... with
an installation fork dependent on whether or not you enter an MCE cd key or
not).

At this point, you should start with a clean install, as your current
install is pretty much messed up.

that was it!! I guess it make sense once you understand the MCE is an
offspring from XP Pro.

thanks a bunch for the help and the timely response!
