XP MCE ?

George

I am experimenting to install XP MCE v3. All is fine until it asks
for files from 'XP PRO SP2' CD. I have one labeled such, but the
files thereon seem to all be packed/compressed or some such. I think
the install seeks several system files, including various IEXPLORE
files.

Should I forget all this as a bad idea, or is there a way I can
overcome this obstacle (ie come up with the needed files)?

What do you mean by "experimenting"? How exactly are you installing this
OS?

MCE must be installed with the original MCE OEM install CDs. You can
not experiment by installing MCE v3 as an add-on to XP Home or XP
Pro. MCE is not just an add-on. It is a customized version and you
MUST use the bundled CDs that is delivered in the OEM software kit.

I am doing a normal install from installation CDs. My purpose is to
briefly install and run that OS to help a friend long-range who says
he is having problems doing same. I have a spare hard drive that I am
doing this on just as a trial. That is what I meant.
Thanks

All I have are two CDs that are supposed to be CD1 and CD2 of a 'XP
MCE install' package. At least that is what is printed on the labels.
It was during the installation I was trying that it wanted another CD
it called 'XP PRO SP2'. I had an XP SP2 installation CD labeled as
such amongst my old stuff that I thought would suffice. Alas, it did
not.

And so, I guess what I really need is the third CD that came with the
other two? No chance of that I guess. So, I guess I can't help here.

Thanks

- Bobb -

CD1 and CD2 of a 'XP MCE install' package.

are OEM CDs - not Retail CD's . They are for a specific box ... say a "HP
4300xyz" laptop so you can't pop them into another model. The software is
specific from OEM and IF correct model/CD then it won't ask - the files will
be where expected.

Sorry, don't know what that means.

What kind of installation CDs?

XP MCE is only available as an OEM version. Are these branded-OEM
installation CDs (and if so, which brand?)? Or are they generic OEM
(System Builder) installation CDs/

Finally, XP MCE is similar to XP Pro. When you were instructed to
provide files from the XP Pro CD, it's possible you were being prompted
for eithre the first or second XP MCE installation CD (since you have a
set of two).

Also, you need to provide more information about the issue your friend
has. What is the make and model of his PC? What OS (and therefore
license) did it originally come with? What is he trying to do -- a
Repair Install or a Clean Install? And why does he think he needs to do
this?

Are you doing something similar to your PC so you can walk him through
the different steps?

So, are there two different sets of XP MCE installation CDs? If so, what
types (branded or generic)? What are the makes and models of the PCs? (I
doubt an HP set of CDs will work on a non-HP computer.)

It's very difficult to offer suggestions when you offer so little
information!

Sorry, don't know what that means.

Just a guess: Sorry about that.

It does seem that when one is saying sorry, he should say it so
clearly that everyone will understand. If not, it can make it worse.

I thought that was what he meant, but he could have been more clear.

Yes, I could have been clearer. I will try in the future.

Thanks for ideas all. I passed them along, but my buddy has not
answered except to say he is otherwise busy. So, I guess I am too.

Please forget the thread.
