Windows xp updates (service pack 3/ MCE updates)

S

Steven Wabik

is there going to be a service pack 3 for Windows xp.
if so, when is it going to be released?

---------------------------------------------
you know how there was mce 2004 and mce 2005, the major difference between
them being service pack 2. is microsoft going to do the same kind of thing
with service pack 3 if it ever comes out. like make a mce 2007 or something
for the media center PCs. i would like to know this because my zd8000 has
mce 2005 on it. my sister's desktop has mce 2004 with the mce 2005 upgrade
running on it. i just rather have a mce upgrade then having a service pack
installed on a medis center PC

Service Pack 3 is tentatively scheduled for the second half of
2007.

As for your second question, any operating system upgrade would
presumably be one of the versions of Vista that is scheduled to
be released early in 2007.

Yes, very probably.

if so, when is it going to be released?

Nobody knows. The only available information is that it's *tentatively*
scheduled for the second half of 2007. I don't recommend betting the farm on
anything witha tentative schedule.

They gotta do something before then. Right now a fresh install of XP
Pro SP2 requires 60 additional critical updates. It will probably be
over 100 by this time next year.

and if they do come out with sp3, they should offer xp installation CDs with
sp3 embeded but only to genuine windows xp users. when i had my desktop the
OS CD did not even have sp1 on it. then later on i told microsoft about it
and they gave me an OS CD with sp2 embeded. if they are going to wait along
time to release sp3, they better be making some big fixes for xp. and they
better be worth it. besides windows media player 11 and IE7 are being
included. i rather just keep media player 9 though. so, what new features
and stuff do you guys think will be included in sp3, when it finally comes
out.

I just hope Microsoft releases many desktop xp skins, cause, the luna skins,
are very boring.
I agree with Steven about providing the xp disks with sp's embedded

Just slipstream the new service pack with your current installation CD
to make a new one with the new SP integrated.

Btw, why should, "they better be making some big fixes for xp, and they
better be worth it." Just having all the post SP2 updates included in
one release would be worth it.

i think they might not do that.
i guess if enough people put in requests for it they might to it.

i have mce 2005 install DVD, does the same tghing apply for making the
slipstream DVD?
since i already have sp2 on it, can i put hotfixes on the slipstream DVD.
and do i have to do them all, one by one, or is there an easier way to do
it?

can you add programs to the slipstream DVD?

I don't know about an mce install DVD specifically, but I don't see why
not. You could ask in the media center newsgroup or do a google search
for it. Here is a list of MS public newsgroups.

i don't think i'm gonna try it.
what i really would like to do is intagrate the drivers for my PC into the
OS DVD. the OS DVD for my PC does not have all the PC drivers on it. most of
the drivers are on a restore driver CD that came with the notebook and then
the rest i have to download from windows update. i only have to do download
2 drivers from windowsupdate though. another thing i would like to do is
intigrate software that came with the PC right onto the OS DVD so that the
apps are already installed and stuff for when XP mce starts up for the first
time. is that even possible?

Yes. nLite has the ability to incorporate additional drivers into the
installation image. Go to their web site http://www.nliteos.com/
and read through the various documentation items they have regarding
the capabilities.

Good luck
