I do alot of home PC tech support in a small town. Yesterday I ran across a
computer with Media Center Edition that had a few backdoor Trojans lurking
about on it. I deleted all the malware I could find, but I think one of them
took a little piece of the Operating System with it, because it is showing
some quirky behavior such as repeated unexplained system errors and
occasionally restarting on login. I perused through the event log, but there
is nothing there to indicate a problem.
Anyway, when I am sitting in front of the computer again, I will run an "sfc
/scannow". If that doesn't work, I'd just assume fix it with a repair
install, but I am pretty sure the recovery disk is going to make me reformat.
I've read that you can get ahold of install disks for different versions of
XP for $10-$15 sans cd key, but I can't find a place to do so. Is there a MCE
install disk available for low-budget IT guys like me who just need the disk
to reinstall an existing operating system just for the sake of correcting
errors?
