XP machine booting then locks up/shut down when running any progra

Hello,

Newbie at troubleshooting XP. Not sure if I have a hardware or software
program. CPU boots to desktop(it does ask if I want to restore active
desktop). When I try to restore or run any other program, computer locks up
( mouse does not move) or screen goes blank. Any input will be extremely
helpful. Thanks in advance.
