XP - Logs on - then Logs off

Attempting to sort out somebodys laptop - HAd lots of viruses - removed -
updated to SP2 - rebooted now whenever I try and login it loads up background
then logs straight off before you can do anything. Admin account does the
same. I have tried renaming userinit to WSAupdate but that didnt work

Any ideas people? Thanks

userinit to WSAupdate

should be wsaupdater.exe.

Visit http://www.winxptutor.com/wsaremove.htm and see section "Unable to logon to Windows after removing BlazeFind using a spyware removal utility?"

If that does not help, inspect the userinit registry value by loading the Software Hive.

Thanks Ramesh, I meant WSAupdater.

I downloaded BartPE already but when I run regedit it doesnt seem to connect
to the reg on the laptop?
everything is referred to as X:\i386\etc where X is the DVD/CD rom drive.

Jay,

From BartPE, you need to open Regedit and then use the "Load Hive" method and load the SOFTWARE hive present in the hard disk [ C:\Windows\System32\Config\ ]

Then fix the Userinit value in the loaded hive. Be sure to unload the Hive after making the required changes.

Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key and Load Hive option will be enabled.
