XP logs off immediately after logging on

I'm tearing my hair out with this one. Have a xp pro workstation on a
domain and it immediately logs back off as soon as any account logs on. It
does this in safe mode as well as normal and local domains as well as the
actual domain. The workstation is visible over the network and I've tried
deleting the profiles, etc without success. It will boot with startup disks
but I've run chkdsk and scanned for bad sectors and no errors are reported.
This m/c worked fine yesterday and it was only this morning that the problem
appeared.

Any suggestions gratefully received!!!!!

Fix the Userinit value remotely, or using an offline registry edit. Before
that, see:

does your network use 'netgear'?
I am not a techie but had a similar problem after upgrading to xp-pro sp2
each time I booted up and xp realised there was a network it switched off
without warning...
I had to visit the netgear website and download a revised driver for it
(also had to according to their instructions remove the network card, remove
existing drivers, reboot system twice before replacing the network card and
using the downloaded drivers)

Many thanks for excellent info, unfortunately it hasn't solved my problem.
The registry key is definitely set to userinit.exe and the userinit is the
correct one.

Any other ideas????

EggNChips,

Have you verified the registry value type as well?

Example: If it's a REG_SZ type, then it won't accept the following format:

%Systemroot%
%Windir%

And, have you checked the Event Logs? (Action menu > Connect to another
computer)
