XP logons don't work

As of a couple days ago, one of my XP PCs will not stay logged on. I
have 2 accounts, user and admin, and when you choose either one, it
appears to log on for maybe second, then it goes back to the log on
screen. This happens even in safe mode, or any mode so far that I've
tried to boot to.
What would cause this, and since I can't get into the system at all, is
there anything I can do other than reinstall XP?

I tried now to reinstall XP, but it keeps either failing half way
through with a blue screen, or it will not boot from the CD drive. So
now I have the HD in another computer and I'm running a virus scan, but
is there something else I can or should look for?
