xp logon screen missing

Hello,

I have a laptop that I am trying to recover from a BSOD error. The laptop is
part of a domain running XP SP2 and was getting a BSOD error on the
volsnap.sys file. After running a repair through the recovery console, the
laptop got past the BSOD error and comes up to a blue screen. The problem is
that there is no logon window. I can see the mouse cursor, move it around,
but there is nothing that will allow me to enter a username and password.

I have run a repair a couple of times, copied the logonui and winlogon files
from another pc to this, and checked the event log remotely. When I try
logging into safe mode, there is just a black screen with Safe Mode written
in each corner of the screen but again no box. I did upgrade the BIOS
thinking there may be a hardward issue but found that if I move the hard
drive to another laptop, I get the same error.

When I try to upgrade to SP3, I get errors saying Windows was unable to save
all the data for file c:\windows.0\pchealth\helpctr\indices. The data has
been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or
network connection.

Anyways, I am trying to get the logon window to come up. I have already
mounted the hard drive and copied the files off but this issue just has me
baffled! Any suggestions?

The problem may be caused by a missing or corrupted Kernel32.dll. Replace
the file and see if that solves it. You can copy the file from the Windows
XP CD through the Recovery Console, or if you have the HD mounted on the
host computer, copy the file from C:\WINDOWS\system32\Kernel32.dll

Check to verify that your TCP/IP connections haven't reached their limit.

How do I do that exactly? I replaced the kernel32.dll file and that did not
have any effect.

Ok, I figured out how to check this and don't see any issues with the number
of TCP/IP connections. There isn't anything out of the ordinary in the Event
Log that wasn't already showing up prior to the laptop going dead.

Can we assume that you've already replaced the "Volsnap.sys" file?.
Have you also done a virus/spyware scan?.
Also tried the ctrl+alt+delete 2/3 times?.
Also check the Technet article on the Winlogon registry key... as the key
name implies, (Windows Logon) it has to do with every aspect of the Windows
Logon Screen including if the screen appears or not... If you have remote
access to the registry, you can compare with the Technet Winlogon article,
you may find some clue to help you bring up the logon screen... that's if
you have remote access to the registry and can edit whatever is necessary.
