Just recently my Login screen seems to think I have an unread e-mail message
in Outlook Express. I have checked throughout my e-mail folders and have
found nothing. How can I clear this register back to zero. It is not a
problem.... just a nuisance

Download and install TweakUI:

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP (TweakUI)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

After installing, go to Start > Programs > PowerToys for Windows XP >
TweakUI. Expand "Logon" and uncheck "Show unread mail on Welcome screen".

Note: Unread message alerts may indicate you have unread messages not only
in Outlook Express, but Hotmail and/or MSN email accounts as well.

Export and delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Your
E-Mail Address]\Message Count

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\Messs
ageExpiryDays

I tried the Tweak program first. If you delete unread mail on login, and then
turn it back on, it clears the problem. I have saved the registry keys to try
the next time it screws up. Thanks to both of you.
