I have been having some issues such as freezing and slowing down. I am
concerned most that when I login to windows my password used to always show
as blask dots. Now it displays as squares. This started the same time as
all my other problems. I have run clean on virus and spyway and adware
checks. I have verified my windows files and re-installed SP2 as well. This
has not fixed the problem.

What could

The most likely explanation is infection by a virus or some other form
of malicious software (collectively known as malware).

Since malware can be very hard to detect you want to thoroughly scan
your system for malicious software with /several/ of the better online
scanners (Kaspersky, Eset, Trend Micro, Panda, Sophos, Symantec etc.)
and, if necessary, submit a HiJack This log to one of the expert web
sites that analyze these logs.

Thanks guys for the help. I will try these. I am very computer literate. I
have sanned my brains out and found no viruses, spyware, or adware. I have
already repaired the windows files and re-installed SP2. I made sure all my
antvirus, spyware, adware programs were up to date. I also have not found
anything in my hijack this log that could be the problem. I constantly
maintain my computer. I was hoping someone had specifically run into the
password problem with a specific solution though. I have not tried some of
the programs and sites you guys have recommended though. I will keep tring

Have you looked at the Warning and Error Reports in the System and
Application logs in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

No, Nothing silly at All Grand Poobah, I was scratching my head for the last
day or two to come up with a solution or an answer to this . I thought about
Font, but why it happen on all accounts?.
If one user account compromised on this machine with Keyloggers of some kind
or a virus can cause this issue, but it will be a good point and it will not
hurt at all to try.

I know it may sound silly but could one of your system fonts gotten
corrupted? Perhaps if you "officially" changed to a different font and
then changed back the problem would go away.

Hi Nass.

I have no other operating system on this computer. I have no error when
starting windows.

I do have other users on the computer. No trouble logging on there but I
still get those boxes/squares when I enter in login password for other users
as well.

I created an new account as well and it does the same.

Thanks.

Keith,

(I'm only here because I'm not all there!)

HI KC,
Do you have other flavour of other operating system ,like Linux/Unix running
side -by-side with windows(using GNUM, GNU, GRUP)?.
Your answer could be found in the SAM and LSA in the registry:

Start Windows XP

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

<MS::>
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type NoLMHash, and then press ENTER.
5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
6. Type 1, and then click OK.
</MS::>

Also did you tried to create another user profile to test it is not user
profile corruption?.
How many users on this system?.

I will keep tring
though.

Thanks again!!

What could
Either, a malware/virus infestation or the system is self destructive, like
and CPU is gone nuts ( overheating) and causing corruption, but you didn't
say how much Disk Space your have, how much RAM and how you are using your

Another is to try to perform a repair/install of the Operating system.
But try these cleaning steps and see how many you will catch?.
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies

Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
= Then try to Disable the Add-Ons on your Browser somehow installed on your
browser, On how to disable the Add-ons follow this:
Click on Programs Tab and then click the Manage Add-Ons Button there Disable
the None/Not Verified Plug-ins/Add-ons ( you need to Renable them one-by-one
later and see which is the culprit or you can send them here in your next
