My LAN connection works fine in SAFE MODE (outlook, explorer), but if I have
the cable modem attached upon boot, XP will stop booting.
Or, when running XP in normal mode, it will lock up when the cat 5 LAN cable
is plugged in.
What the F..................?

Based on your mention of Cat 5, I guess you have a LAN ethernet
connection to the cable modem. Therefore, the only difference between
when connected or not, and when in SAFE mode, is that the LAN card is
activated.

Accordingly, evidence points towards a hardware or software fault with
the LAN card. Take a look at the Device Manager in Hardware in My
Computer Properties to see if the LAN card is functioning.

Maybe it's not seated right. Maybe the softare is corupted. Maybe it's
a dead card.

Thanks, Rob, but I've been there and done that........again, everything
works fine in safe mode.....I can surf the 'net, send and receive mail etc.
Now, when I disable the card, reboot with the LAN attached, the boot goes
fine and I'm able to use the computer as usual. I then enable the card
(mind you, the cable is attached) and the computer locks up upon enabling.

Joe,

Yes ... I realize that. But the fact is that when not in SAFE mode it
does not work. It's still my hunch that the LAN card has flawed software
or hardware.

I guess what i would would be to to more than "disable". Remove the LAN
card (uninstall and physically remove). Reboot to get machine to work
without the card.

Then re-install the LAN card from scratch --- let XP recognize it,
install appropriate drivers, etc. That may freshen the drivers to make
it work.

Beyond that, maybe others have ideas...
