XP local profile reset once a while

Every once a while, one user's profile got reset. In C:\Documents and
Settings\ folder, first it has \Username\ folder, then profile got reset, and
added \username.domain\ folder, after a couple of months, it got reset again,
added \username.domain.000\, then \username.domain.001\, and so on.

Why is that, and how to prevent it. - It only occurs to one user, not others.

The Current User Hive ( Registry ) can't be opened when that user logs
onto the PC. For XP there is an add-on service called User Profile Hive
Cleanup that assists with closing a profile. This tool might help to prevent
future corruption.

User Profile Hive Cleanup:

Without more detailed information on the user's settings/data it's not
possible to speculate on why that person's profile can't be loaded.

Thanks. I will certainly try the profile hive cleanup utility.

What other detail information should I provide? It's a laptop for a field
staff, so it's hard to reset it once the problem happens.
That laptop has
- XP SP3
- Office 2003
- Symantec Antivirus Enterprise
- our own custom applicaton (Powerbuilder with Sybase ASA database)

I suppose my approach would be to create a new profile and migrate
the users files into it. You wouldn't want to copy 100% of the old one
since it might carry the underlying issue to the new profile. The user's
settings would be lost be could probably be recreated. Trying to find
and remove a profile's corrupted components is almost impossible to
do.

Also antivirus software scans the registry on shutdown or logoff locking it.
Maybe this is where you should start looking
