My xp laptop can find the shared printer on the win2000
desktop (which has the wireless router attached).
However, when I get to final stage of adding the printer
to the laptop, I get a "windows cannot connect to
printer. The driver you are trying to install is not
compatible with windows xp."

help please.
thanks

A possible cause is that the printer driver on the Windows 2000 computer is
a "Version2" (Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000) driver. Some of these will
work on a Windows XP computer, but many won't. Windows XP drivers are
normally the "Version 3" variety. A way to find out if the driver on the
Windows 2000 computer is Version 2 or Version 3 is:

1. open the Printers folder
2. click File, Server Properties
3. select the Drivers tab
4. look at the "Version" column - if, for the printer you have, it says
"Windows NT or 2000", this is a "Version 2" driver. If it says "Windows
2000" this is a "Version 3" driver.

If Windows XP has a built in driver for your printer, or you have an XP
driver from the vendor, the technique at
http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/NetPrinterNoPP.htm might work.

Another alternative would be to download a "Version 3" driver from the
printer manufacturer's web site and use that to upgrade the printer driver
on the Windows 2000 computer. In many cases, the "Windows XP" printer
driver will install and work correctly on Windows 2000.

If this doesn't help, please post the make and model of your printer.

Bruce-
Thanks for the tips. I tried them all and still no
success.

I checked the version, and I had version 2. I went to HP
website and downloaded version 3.5.

Attempted connection and received same response.

Make/Model of Printer: HP PhotoSmart Series P1000

Thanks for the help.
