Hello,

I would like to know how the ip adresses are distributed when setting up a
LAN with the automatic setup function of XP.
I am using one pc (which I set up first) which connects correctly to the
outside world.
Testing with two other systems with automatic lan setup went fine concerning
the LAN part.
On pc has no problem getting to the www but the other (a portable) has been
setup for connecting independently by modem to the www.
The questions I pose are the following:

1. Do I need to apply fixed IP's and a bridge (hope this is the right word -
in french passerelle- ) to the IP of the connected machine?
2. Do I add the preferred DNS's and/or do I check the box 'automatic
detection of network parameters in the connection part of IE on the
portable?

Seems complicated but I guess my english is good enough for someone to be
able to help me along!

TIA

Hi

No, you don't use a bridge for this you need to install ICS on the PC
that's connected to the internet. Have a look at
www.practicallynetworked.com or www.homenethelp.com - both of those sites
have tutorials on how to share your connection. If you have any questions
after reading those sites then post again.

The ICS is up and running, as I said.
The LAN is working.
The connected pc is on the WWW
The other has web access.
The portable however tries to make a 'traditional' dial up connection to the
web; it is on the LAN but want to dail out or remain in offline mode.
I have tried setting up fixed IP's and instructed the portable to use the
connected pc as 'bridge'.
What is wrong
Thanx Bill!

Sorry, I misunderstood your post.

OK, on the laptop have you changed Tools/Internet Options/Connections to
either 'never dial' or 'Dial when a network connection is not present'?
That's what it should be set to for a LAN connected PC. When you say
'bridge', do you mean you've created that in the Network Connections
folder? If you have you should remove it and make the changes above. You
also shouldn't need fixed IPs, they should be set to dynamic.

Hello Bill,

Nothing in your reply I haven't tried yet.
Still the laptop insists on wanting to make its own connection.
Thats why I set the ip's to fixed and in the advanced mode of the tcp/ip
properties I tried forcing a 'passerelle' in French. It may not be called a
bridge in English ; its the last block in the advanced options wher you pass
by a fixed ip. I alsio tried to check the box in IE 'automaticly detect
connection parameters' but nogo yet.
Any ideas??
