XP Key

John Breslin

I've done a bunch of searches in this group and it offers me no help
past what I could find elsewhere.

I have XP profession and am a student. The version of XP that I have
was provided by my school (with the Key). They have some sort of
agreement with MS that allows this apparently as any student in my
class who needed the OS was given a key. I am not sure if this will
be considered an OEM license or not. I am a Computer Science student
however and do some data base work and we use MS products.

I have had issues lately with my XP and have started to reinstall
windows. It of course got to the point were it asked for my key and
having moved recently, and having my cd's in a sleeve, I couldn't find
the small orange sticker I was given with the key on it. It's on a
case I have somewhere in storage in one of my many boxes. I really am
not sure where and it's not convenient for me to access this.

My box is a dual boot with linux (mandrake 9) on it. I can access
files in windows of course while using linux but can't access files
from windows as the reinstall is not complete. I installed overtop to
simply fix issues. I have aida32 on my box but do not have any saved
log files to help, and can't run the aida from linux (even with wine).
I cannot run any of the other apps I find to find the serial number.

The number that the microsoft website offers is, to the best that I
can tell located
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;prodoffer33a&sd=GN
but support is offered only Monday to Friday 9 - 5. It is of course
Saturday. This is the link it leads me to but it states on that page
that you must have your PID when you call. This concerns me a bit. I
also never Registered the software. I did activate it obviously. I
have been using it for the past 2 years and have done a couple
installs okay (we play in school and often screw stuff up). From
what I can read there I will not be considered OEM but I am not sure.

I cannot get in touch with appropriate people at my school it being
summer break.

So.................I don't need any replies sending me links to
aida32, magic jelly bean or the MS number at the page above.
Advice on whether or not I should be able to find this key myself, if
MS should be able to help or if I'll have to wait until school goes
back to get my serial number again would be appreciated.

And no one needs to tell me that I should have been more cautious. I
could have done many things before the reinstall to prevent this. I'm
beating myself over this already.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like you're stuck!

A key that will not allow updates.
Not only do you seem to need to insult others as a means of boosting
your own ego....fails as likely much you do.
You aparently lack the basic knowledge of the limitations of that
stolen key.

No I dont Mr knuckle Dragger.

I don't care what the key can do or cannot do, I just posted a widely used
key.

Clearly you don't know or care how you ruin other peoples computing
experiences.
Glad you agree you lack the basic knowledge.
Encouraging piracy from your own ISP no less.
I wonder if your ISP down there cares?
Perhaps we shall see!

Good bye Julien, you are simply not worth the time...to me.

You have options, get the Product Key from the university or from your key
provided from your school from your storage. Options other than the previous
two would result in an install that could come back to bite you.

Hey Jupiter,

Did you catch the name of that poster, "Julien Carrot"? Sounds like just
another vegetable to me, and misspelled at that.

Cheers, JAX

Done for a reason.
Therefore not misspelled at all.

So what do you want us to do, give you a key? How about calling one of your
classmates (you do have friends, don't you) and get the key from them? It is
likely the same key for everyone.

Not interested.

I have a legitimate key. Or will. I don't want one one that isn't.

As I just posted in reply......i have no interest in using a different
key. With playing at school a non valid copy is not an
option.....imagine having my system unavailable to me because I'm
using a crack 2 weeks before finals and trying to use that as an
excuse WHEN the school gives me free software. Not interested thanks.

And I am not living (for this portion of the summer) where I go to
school and have stuff stored. And the person I have to contact at the
school is not available for a few more weeks. Because school isn't in
session again for almost a month that means I'll have to wait until I
move back. A month with no windows won't have me ahead of the
class....

It is for this reason I am looking for a way to grab the number from
my system.

I'll call MS at that number when they next open and hopefully they
will deal with me. I'm still looking for help in case they won't.

Thanks again

Greetings --

It seems you've answered your own "question." Wait until you can
get hold of your school's IT department to get the proper Product Key
for your Academic license.

Not sure why you posted this message, since you seem to be aware that you
have no options to recover the PK, unless you are simply looking for
sympathy with your plight?

Not sure why you posted this message, since you seem to be aware that you
have no options to recover the PK, unless you are simply looking for
sympathy with your plight?

Sympathy? For being stupid and not making sure I had my key before I
tried to reinstall? Or for not grabbing it with Aida32? I want a
solution. Not sympathy. I would be even more stupid for spending the
hours I have trying to solve this and then for not asking for help
before formatting.

I firmly believe that the key is still on my machine. I have back ups
of my registry. If it's available for other programs to access then
it is available. It's just a matter of knowing how or figuring it
out.

I've learned long ago that there is a solution to nearly any problem.
And that most often someone somewhere knows it.

So what do you want us to do, give you a key? How about calling one of your
classmates (you do have friends, don't you) and get the key from them? It is
likely the same key for everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion but the keys are not identical. We were
told when were given them this. And not to lose them of course. :(

And I think I was more than clear that I wanted MY key. Not another.
Spend 5 minutes pondering the work I've done and you'll realize that
finding a pirate key would have taken less time.

With an attitude like yours, I doubt if anyone who might have a solution
will offer it now. You created this and you have the nerve to give
other people sh*t for it. Lol what an idiot. You deserve what you got.

I gave no one shit. I simply stated that I was not looking for
sympathy but a solution.

If you followed the thread you will see that I did a heck of a lot of
research before posting. I am not into wasting other peoples time in
looking for answers for me. I am also not vain enough to believe that
I can find all of the answers.

The reply I got (that we are posting about now) offered no help. Much
like yours. I am not sure why posts that don't offer help are given
but I have politely appreciated all of the input I have recieved.

If I sound "to the point" it is simply because I don't view the
newsgroups as a place to waste my time or the time of others.
If someone can't offer help I am not certain why they would waste
there time replying, especially in a snide manner, except to make a
person feel worse about the situation they are asking for help on.

Dude, if i owned a key and lost/misplaced it...i sure as hell wouldnt pay
for another and would have "found" a key by now ;)
so quit banging your head and download one.
