xp issues.

abused

Recently, pver the past few months my computer has been
acting "funny". Anytime that I switch users or log off,
the a: drive will start scanning itself like it is
reading a disk when nothing is in there; furthermore, My
cp usage begins to rise to an alarming rate of 99% for no
apparent reason. I have trouble logging into any website
whatsoever, no matter what my security setting is at. I
have files named msblast.exe, mslaugh.exe, carpserv.exe,
all in my configuration utility, but I'm not sure what
they are. Also, my computer shut off a few weeks ago
without any commands from me or known electrical surges,
but when I had restarted the computer, it would not move
beyond the windows xp boot screen because the boot file
was corrupt? I used the recovery disk, and reinstalled
everything, but the problems are worse now. I cannot log
onto any messeneger service, whether it be, windows, msn
messenger, aim, or yahoo messenger. I can offer more
information, but assistance is greatly needed, thanks.

Sounds like you have the blaster worm, as evidenced by the
mblast.exe running in your processes. Get the patch from
Microsoft. You might want to consider getting virus
protection software, or updating the signatures if you
already have it, and regularly (monthly or automatically)
install critical updates from Windows Update site.

I have ended the msblast from running in my processes,
but no matter what I do, I cannot remove the worm. I
thought there may be another way to fix the problems i am
experiencing, but i only have norton 2001 antivirus
software, and it isn't compatible with XP. Since I am
going to have to purchase new software which would anyone
recommend?
