Hey I've got a better idea, why don't you just use Windows 98 SE, they don't
really need to re-release as it's still available OEM.

Oh btw I've got games that require IPX/SPX working fine over my network.

I have used FIFA 2001,NBA Live 2001 on XP-even though they were not designed
for XP (as they were released before XP came out) successfully. And FS98
will work in XP.

.
How did you get ipx/spx to work on XP?
I have 3 machines networked with CAT5 cables and a hub.
The windows 98 and Windows ME machines can play games
with the ipx/spx protocol, but the darn new XP machine
can't see the ipx connection. I added the ipx/spx
protocol in Windows XP but it won't see the ipx
connection. I heard of something called "NetWare
redirector". Do I need this program to make it work?
Any help would be apprieciated.
Thanks,
Joe

I have run Duke Nukem 3D on XP which was designed NOT to run on Windows at
all (it's DOS only).

I've seen a lot of bashing and a lot of off topic responses to this post
including
the standard "I've got games that require IPX/SPX working fine over my
network".
Yes, the subject and contents of the original post didn't so much ask for
help but
rather bashed XP. But surely there is someone out there who knows about
IPX/SPX
who could at least inquire as to what the problem is and try to help.

As a gamer, I watched this newsgroup for months before making the switch to
Microsoft XP. I saw games that I had that simply would not work, and
constructive
workarounds and solutions for games that I had that could be made to work.
This
group was invaluable in the decision as to when I would upgrade. Not if I
would
upgrade but when. I was attempting to run games on NT and 2000 long before
XP. Coming from a Solaris/Unix professional background the stability of the
NT/2000
kernal was a no brainer (can you say ME). My only issues to this date have
been
game related.

There are simply some games that will NOT work in XP. I have found XP to be
the most stable and consumer friendly OS from Microsoft to date. I don't
mean
to rant but would like to see if there is a solution to this posters
problem. Other
than an attitude adjustment!

As for the orginator of this post, these message boards are a valuable
resource
for both new and advanced level XP Users. If you really require assistence
or
seek information a subject line with a blatent bash against the OS will not
get
you very far. The next time you find have an issue, describe it to the best
of your
ability and give some system specs. There are people that would be glad to
help
you.

There's ten minutes of my life I wont get back!

Thanks for the honest post, Bret. It is nice to hear from someone who has
actually done their homework, research and knows how to adapt to and enjoy a
new operating system. Just out of curiosity, what games won't work on XP
for you?

I think that Xp is not at all friendly to gamers and most games on the
whole, except the really new ones. The worse thing about Xp is it's
inability to assign game controller IDs. This makes it impossible to
play older games that only see ID#1. I currently have a huge problem
with XP assigning my rudder pedals (CH Pro USB)to ID#1 and my Joystick
(Cougar USB) to ID#2 no matter how I plug them in. I really Microsoft
makes a patch or something to give back to option of controller ID
assigning.

Hi Phil,
I just posted some more in depth information about the controller ID
issue to your other post. In short games only use the ID if they use the
WINMM interface. If they use WINMM they almost never look for device data
anywhere but ID1. You can set a device to ID1 by making it the Preffered
Device in the Game Controllers control panel. Since ID's are assgned from 1
up if you have a device at ID1 and ID2 and you set the device at ID2 to be
"Preffered" then they will swap ID#'s. I also posted a method there you can
use to see if a game is using WINMM or DirectInput. Have you ever been able
to use multiple devices in this game? The vast majority of games do not
accept data from devices other than the first one they find.

Let me know if you have more questions or want ore help. I can probably dig
that game up and see what's wrong if needed.
