XP Installation

I just discovered that I have a bootleg copy of XP Home
Edition. So I've purchased a legitimate copy and want to
install it over the bootleg version. Though I will back
up our critical data, e.g., Quicken, is the install
destructive, will it wipe out our hard disk, does it only
overlay or replace the bootleg copy?

I can't speak for Windows XP Home Edition but I know that you can non
destructively run an install overtop of a pirated version of XP Pro with a
legal version of XP Pro. You are certainly wise to backup your important
data first.
