XP installation won't recognize CD drive

While upgrading to Win XP the setup crashes and won't
recognize the CD to download certain files. Cleaning the
CD does not work (CD works fine on other machines).

Blue screen also says:

Setup was unable to verify drive C:
Your computer may not have enough memory to examine the
drives, or your windows XP CD may contain some corrupted
files.

To continue press enter.

NEXT screen says:

Setup cannot access the CD containing Window XP
installation files.

What do I do? Even trying to restore the previous WIN 98
doesn't seem to work, because I get a missing/corrupted
file command.exe. I can't seem to get anywhere on the
computer where I can download the files to the computer
to try and reinstall XP. Thanks.

Checking other posts - I don't think there were any
hardware conflicts during the initial analysis with the
CD-ROM. Can't seem to read CD. How do I get to where I
can reinstall by copying files to hard drive? Thanks to
any answerers.
