I am trying to install XP pro on a computer without
windows - a new install.
i placed the new XP pro disk in the drive d: and then on
the advice of msft support info, prompted ms dos to
<d:\i386\winnet.exe>.
The computer responded by noting that there was a "smart
drive" and gave me the option to load smart drive through
ms dos OR to go ahead with XP Pro instal. I choose to go
ahead with install and the computer began to copying files
to the hard drive.
However, this started over 2 hours ago and the screen
still shows < Please wait while Setup copies files to your
hard disk> and the screen is not showing any files being
copied....

Is this normal?

it is now very slowing copying the files. Should I stop
the install , then enable "smartdrv"??. If so, how do I
enable smartdrv through ms dos?? thanks

Greetings --

You would enable smartdrv before you start the install. It is recommended
that you dont install from DOS at all. The Windows XP CD-ROM is bootable.
You may also download 6 boot floppies from Microsoft in order to start the
install if you dont have a bootable CD-ROM drive.

Sean,
Is there a reason you can't boot from the XP CD and run XP setup? You would
need to enter the bios at boot up and set the boot order to boot from CD
before hard drive. See link below for more detailed instructions on doing a
clean install of XP. If you can't boot from CD and have to install from a
dos prompt, see the link to install from dos.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
