XP install fails

Ken Summerall

I am trying to perform a clean install of XP home on a HP
Pavilion 8586C (PIII 600 w/128 mg RAM). I am using the
boot floppies from MS Website and everything goes fine
until I insert the XP CD. I get the following
message "Value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted
or missing. Value 0 on the line in section
[SourceDiskFiles] with key "SP1.cab." Setup cannot
continue."

I have tried all that I can think of. Swapped CD drives,
reset BIOS, copied original install CD and used copy,
etc. Please help, the HDD has been formatted and now I
have a dead PC.

Ken;
That computer should have the capability to boot to CDROM.
Skip the floppies, they are not needed.
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

I had a similar meaage. It turned out I had the wrong version of the boot
floppies. If your XP CD includes Service Pack 1, you need to ook at the
very bottom of the MS site page to find the version of the floppies to
download for your case. Good luck.

Thanks, I finally got it to boot to the CD but now I am
getting a STOP Error page. The Error is STOP:
0x0000006F. Any ideas?

Ken;
Try it again.
Make sure you delete ALL partitions in step 5.
