XP incomplete boot

I upgraded my sons laptop to XP about a month ago and yesterday it stopping
booting to desktop screen. It seems to boot "Windows XP appears on the
screen" then the screen flashes and the hard drive continues to run, but
nothing on the screen. I was able to boot in safe mode and looked at an
activity log. There was an error entry a couple weeks ago about activating
windows.

I do not remember if I did because I was in a hurry. If this is the problem
how do I go about doing this? I can not access the internet in safe mode. I
did a reinstall last night, no change.

If this is not the problem, what else could it be?

Usually if you can boot into Safe Mode it is a driver issue. But I'd do some
system diagnostics first. Lots of free stuff out there.

Always first: Memory:
Reseat memory then go to:
http://www.memtest.org/

Second: pull out the harddrive. Determine the vendor and model and get the
free diag for it online.

If neither of those reveal issues plug it into a monitor If you have one
handy see if Windows appears ok when booting the laptop with that.

if you select safemode
with networking, you
will have access to the
internet..

Thank you, I think I remember seeing that as one of the startup options. I
am only guessing the activation is the problem. The monitor works and
everything else, I just seems to be locked out of windows. Thanks very much!

you're welcome.

something to keep
in mind is that if
windows is functional
in safemode, then
whatever is causing
a failure in normal mode
is likely to be something
that is non-microsoft that
is loading and causing the
dysfunction.
