XP/IE/dreaded AOL

I'm installing DSL for a friend tomorrow who has AOL for his ISP. I
plan to uninstall AOL and AOL adapters before the DSL install. I've
never even seen AOL in action, and am wondering what to do about saving
his *favorites*, will I lose them when I uninstall? Does AOL use IE
with just it's name on it or have they changed it somehow? Anything
that anybody can help me with prior to uninstalling will be most
appreciated.

Will you loose the Favorites? Depends. If he has them stored on the local
PC, most likely will loose them. If they are stored on AOL, no you will not
loose them.

AOL has their own browser and I can not remeber wich browser (IE or
NetScape) that it is based on. I know somewhere in the AOL Browser, there is
a place to check "use IE Settings."

I don't know why you feel the need to uninstall AOL before installing DSL.
If you hook the DSL up to the NIC, XP will find and configure it.
All you have to do is run AOL connection setup. It will detect the new
network connection and add it as an available connection/location.
You can then select connect via Broadband/LAN and AOL won't try to dial.
I've been piggybacking AOL on my cable for years.

AOL uses IE as it's internal browser, it just strips the header/toolbars off
& uses it's own.
The browser window that appears WITHIN the AOL window is the internal
browser.

You have been able to use IE externally with AOL for years.
Any favorites saved in regular IE will be untouched.
If you're not using AOL, the internal favorites will not be available as
they are saved on the AOL server and only are available with the internal
browser.

You can back up the favorites to a floppy. And, if you want to really remove
AOL completely, reformat the hard drive and tell your friend to get a real
ISP, NOT AOSmell.
