Can't restore system; Can't access some websites

Brother's computer (XP Home, 2000 miles away) will not open some web sites
(AOL, CNN, Verizon email login)- gets page not found error (is typing in
URL, not using Favorites list). Other sites open
fine (Amazon, Ebay). He claims to be running up to date Norton suite, has
also run AdAware and Spybot. No malware found. Has rebooted computer & DSL
modem; has cleared TIF, cookies, etc, has disabled Norton. Had him try
system restore; was unable to restore to any points prior to date problem
began (3/15). Restore point for that date shows Google Earth installed but
claim they didn't install & can't find any evidence of it on computer. Can
restore to points later but doesn't fix. Everything seems to be fine (as far
as he knows) except IE. Don't have
specifics about updates installed, can get them if req'd. Thanks for any
ideas you have to share.

Added info: Some have issue with these sites because of java, etc. Also
for some strange reason if Work Offline is checked it works. Good luck and

Thanks, Kelly, I'll have him try this (assuming he can get to those
websites!) and will let you know. BTW, I've used your website repeatedly over
the years, was just there today looking for solutions to this and another
problem!

Kelly, Just wanted to update you and let you know he gave up and restored his
system from as-shipped image mfg had on hard drive. That was the easiest of
the suggestions I gave him at that point and he was tired of messing with it.
He did run ewido, found some things but didn't fix his problem. Started whole
process the HJT guys had set out, but got sick of it all and went for quick
solution.
