XP Home won't install software or drivers

My laptop won't let me install anything anymore. Absolutely baffled.

I've checked for viruses with up-to-date AVG, and scanned for malware with
Windows Defender, neither of which found anything.

When attempting to install Flash player, the install goes through on the
macromedia site, and the animation there plays, but as soon as I navigate
away, flash is not there again.

Tried to install a replacement wireless card last night, the install program
ran without errors, but as soon as I connect the card it runs the new
hardware wizard, appears to install the driver, then fails at the end of the
wizard with a "file not found".

Any suggestions? I assume the 2 problems are linked.

TIA

Tom.

Check your System Event log for error(s) denoted by Red Icons.
Click Start, Run (Type) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]
Select System Log (Left-Pane) and then double-click each Red
Icon in the Right-Pane to get details and a brief description. The
important info is the Event ID #, which can be cross-referenced
here:

*Occasional errors do occur, however in most all situations a PC
that has multiple Event Log errors should be resolved.
