I have been working on a computer running XP Home, It seems to hang when it
tries to display the log on screen. Any ideas?

Hi ... Could be many reasons as to why , Its mostly like a hardware problem
but it also could be the OS , Are you receiving any errors ? How old is the
computer , provide computer specs ?

The computer is a compaq, Celeron CPU, 256MB DDR. there are no error
messages, all I get is a blank screen with the mouse pointer after the splash
screen.

Did you download anything ? Or make any changes beforehand this problem
started happening ? Have you try a system restore to an earlier time ?
Also have a view at that link Taur provided

....

The computer is a freinds of my daughters, I did find, and remove 2 infected
files, but still can not get it to boot. I have tried to restore to the last
known good, but that did not work. It looks like it cant start exploror,
even when I try safe mode. I do know that there are 4 users setup on it, but
it never gets to the log-on screen. I would try to do a repair install, but I
dont have a copy of XP home, What I have is XP Professoinal for my computer.
as far as down loading anything, I was told no, but that is all I know.

You wouldn't be able to do an repair installment with the pro version , You
are going to need a home version

....
