XP Home WIll Not Boot Even In Safe Mode

When trying to boot XP Home after a year of excellent use
and it goes through the BIOS i get this message:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not
shutdown or did not re-start successfully. A recent
hardware or software change might have caused this.

It gives the following options for starting:
SAFE MODE
SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING
SAFE MODE WITH COMMAND PROMPT
LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION
START WINDOWS NORMALLY

It will keep rebooting when i try using any of the above
options and only gets to the BIOS then this screen. If i
try safe mode i see it scrolls through different HD
locations so i don't think the HD is trashed.

This PC was really only a HTPC used for watching movies
and as a MP3 server. Before this problem i did use the
disk cleanup and also choose to compress old files. I
used this PC after this with no problems. I did have a
power outage but the PC was not running at the time.

I have tried to repair with my XP Cd but had problems
viewing everthing and need to install a CRT monitor rather
than my RPTV.

Any suggestions are welcome??

I have the same problem after installing a driver for
Linksys wireless. Will be monitoring your post and will
let you know if I learn anything in the meantime.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration? This will attempt to restore a
known good registry

Hi there,

My post is down the list - "unable to start".
I got this same message too. I tried safemode, last
known good confi and start windows normally.
Did not work. It went to blank then windowsxp home
edition and then compaq ...... again and again.
Can anyone help, please ?

I called Microsoft on this once and (for $35) they walked me through a
repair. Sounds like a corrupted registry. There are may backups that are
restoreable, but they're not accessible through the screens you refer to.

There's a knowledgebase article that explains the procedure, but if you can
pay, its a whole lot easier and safer to let MS (assuming you get someone
good) walk you through it.

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration? This will attempt to restore a
known good registry

hi..
to get rid of this problem...try this...
choose the option of safe mode and hit enter.Once you are
at the safe mode desktop just go ahead and click

start - all programs -accessories - system tools - system
restore - restore my computer to an earlier date and then
choose a date from the calander when the system was
working absoulutely fine.

If this fails..try
start - run - msconfig - under the general tab uncheck the
option that reads Load Startup Items and hit apply and
then hit ok.
If this works gr8 else you my need to do a chkdsk /r from
the recovery console.

I have tried all the safe modes and am in the process
right now of using the chkdsk /r to see if that helps.

hi all...
here is the step by step procedure to do a repair on your
computer.If this does not help plz mail me back at
(e-mail address removed)

1. insert your windows XP CD in the drive.And shut the
system down.Incase it brings up any window just close it
and shut the system down.

2.Once done restart the system and within 4 seconds of the
restart start tapping the F12 key on the keyboard.(people
who have a compaq or a dell system can check for the
respective logs to come on restart and then start tapping
the F12 key on the keyboard)
Please make sure that u are tapping the keys and not
holding them down.

3.By tapping the F12 key on the keyboard you shall have
the options to boot the computer through the CDROM it may
be listed as IDE-CDROM or the ATAPI-CDROM choose it and
hit enter.\
IMP ::: AS SOON AS YOU HIT ENTER ON THE ABOVE SCREEN IT
WOULD COME UP WITH A MESSAGE SAYING ""PRESS ANY KEY TO
BOOT FROM CD""
THE RESPONSE TIME FOR THIS MESSAGE IS ALMOST ONE SECOND
HENCE PLEASE PRESS THE SPACE BAR ON THE KEYBOARD AS SOON
AS U SEE IT OR ELSE IT SHALL TAKE YOU BACK TO THE ERROR
MESSAGE AND U SHALL HAVE TO PERFORM THE STEP 3 ALL OVER
AGAIN.

4.On completeing the step 3 successfully the disply would
read somethin like "setup is loading files" and after some
time shall bring a few options one of which shall prompt
you to press the R key on the keyboard for a repair thru
recovery console.

5.Once in the recovery console it shall bring you to a C
prompt and ask you to enter a no please type 1 and hit
enter.

6,At this point it may or may not ask you for a
adminstrator's password.If it does not move to step 7, but
if it does then incase you have set a administrator's
password please enter it and if you have not then just
press the TAB key once followed by the enter key.

7.At the prompt type in
chkdsk /r
and hit enter

8.It shall start the repair and during this time shall go
from a 0% to a 100% but this will not be smooth as it
shall fall from a higher % to a lower %.

9.On finishing it shall stop at a 100% at this stage
restart the system and take the CD out.

10.Restart the system and it should work fine

The other day my sister-inlaw was removing microsoft updates from the add and remove area of her xp home edition and when the computer restarted it came up with these errors (The procedure entry point SHGetfile Info a could not be located in dynamic link library shell 32.dll and also The logon user interface dll msgina.dll failed to load. contact your system administrator to replace the dll, or restore the original dll. She called me over and I tryed to reboot in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt,last known good configuration . None of these do anything at all but give me the same errors it was giving to start with . I went home to check or this site and found a spot to download a reboot on floopy disc took 6 floopy dics. Went back to her computer and it reboots all 6 dics and then askes for system Administrator password. I don't know anything about xp home edition computers Please help me if you can . So in other words she was UNINSTALLING all the updates.
Does she know what she is doing?
I suggest she re-packs the machine up and returns it to the vendor for a
refund.

The default Administrator password for WinXP Home is blanks.
