Sorry if this has been covered, I missed it.

in my new computer I have a choice of XP Home or XP Pro for an
additional $80 CAD. Is it worth it? What differences are there?
Thanks - Giovanni

XP Pro has some more networking features like being able to connect to
a domain or run a web server. It also gives you more control over
security and file sharing settings.

Really, most people don't need those things, and the Home edition is
fine.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jim. Exactly what I needed.
Cheers, Giovanni.

XP Home can run a web server (Apache, Tomcat, JBoss...), but it cannot
run the IIS web server. Only XP Pro or the MS Server systems can do
that.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects, except
that Professional has a few features (mostly related to networking and
security) missing from Home. For most (but not all) home users, even those
with a home network, these features aren't needed, would never be used, and
buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note one other point not mentioned on any of those sites: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.

The major difference it $80 CAD.

You can encrypt your files/drive with XP Pro. XP Home does not have the EFS,
so Pro provides better security.
