XP Home Upgrade "Bad System Configuration"

Hi, I have been trying to upgrade my friends Windows ME to XP home using the
upgrade version of XP Home. When I ran the system compatibility test, it
comes up with a blocking issue "Bad System Configuration" and tells me
Q311446 about the Sircam virus. So I checked his machine, and it had viruses,
but no Sircam. I used two different A/V scanners to make sure the machine is
now clean. I removed all Spyware, etc. Yet I still get this error. I tried to
just install anyways, but to stops the install bringing up the same error.

So, is there a way around this to do the install?
Can I find out more info as to what is causing this?
Anyone else have this problem?

You need to perform a "Clean Install" in your situation.

Any particular reason why I have to do this? I was trying to avoid this step
so that I wouldn't have to resetup all his Apps, etc.

I read that article and that is why I made sure to do a second virus check. I
don't believe that is the problem. FYI I am an IT Pro so you can go into more
detail if possible.
