XP Home unable to share dial up with XP Pro

I have two computers connected through a four port hub. Up until 04/13/05,
the two have been able to share files, a printer and a dial up connection.
The XP Home system is the PC hosting the dial up connection.

I have run Network Diagnostics the XP Home and it stated that the network
adpater was failng; unable to ping the IP address assigned. It also stated
the IP address for the DHCP server was invalid. On the XP Pro PC, the
Network diagnostics is fine except for the same error about an invalid
address for the DHCP server.

Wanting to eliminate the network adapter, I replaced the network adpater
with a new one. Same result. It is issued the same IP address and states it
cannot ping that address.

When I installed the hub, I also installed IPX protocol on both PC's and set
the IP address and DNS to auto.

If I set the IP address to a static address, I get the same results. The XP
Home PC cannot ping itself.

I can still share files and the printer.

Also, the network icon in the system tray shows a yellow !. When I try the
repair option from that icon, it fails. Unable to receive a new IP address.

Any ideas?

Since you can share files and the printer, I think it's unlikely that
the network adapter is failing.

Have you installed a firewall program (ZoneAlarm, Norton, McAfee,
PC-cillin, Sygate, eTrust, etc) on the XP Home PC? If so, un-install
the program. Some firewalls are incompatible with ICS, and an
improperly configured firewall is the most likely problem when a
computer can't ping itself.

You don't need a separate firewall program to protect your computers,
because XP's built-in firewall can do it. If the computer has XP
Service Pack 2, enable the Windows Firewall. If it has XP original or
Service Pack 1, enable the Internet Connection Firewall on the dial-up
connection and disable it on the local area network connection.

I only have the XP firewall enabled but on the network connections it shows
both my dial up and the local area connection as firewalled. I re-ran the
network wizard on both PC's, set the IP address to static and now the XP Home
PC passes the network diagnostics. I cannot still not access the Internet
from the XP Pro PC.

Any ideas?

I was able to fix the problem by running the network wizard and setting the
DNS address on the XP pro PC to the address given to the network adapter on
the XP Home PC by the wizard. I beleive that a recent update may have caused
problems with the DHCP function on the XP Home PC.
