I am looking at gettting a new laptop, and everytime I
find a laptop I like, it has XP Home. Does any one know
if I can upgrade from Home to Professional? Buy the
laptop and then XP Pro and just upgrade?

THanks!

You can upgrade to pro with no problems except one you
must buy it witch kinda sux but what can you do.

You can get an upgrade pack from most computer stores,or
even check the web for some cheaper deals.

Have a look at Dell - I think they will do you a laptop with the OSD of your
choice....

Yes. First make sure you *need* one of the extras in XP Pro (joining an
office network domain is the most likely). See

Apart from these the systems are identical - don't spend money on Pro
just because it sounds macho

Check with the store and also with the laptop manufacturer's web site.

Sometimes they have two models - one with Home, the other with Pro,
and the price difference will be less than purchasing the retail
upgrade version of Pro.

You may have to get the store to special order the model you want with
XP Pro.

Also I seem to recall that at least one laptop manufacturer (Toshiba?)
has or had an offer available where you could purchase the upgrade to
Pro from them at less than the retail cost.

But above all else make certain that you actually need at least one of
the relatively few features and functions which are found only in XP
Pro and not in XP Home. Otherwise there is no benefit in purchasing
Pro because the two versions are absolutely identical with respect to
the features and functions that are found in both versions, and are in
fact compiled from the same source code base.

Good luck

WinXP Home can be upgraded to WinXP Pro by using the WinXP Pro
Upgrade, but wouldn't it be a lot simpler, not to mention less
expensive, to simply order the desired laptop with WinXP Pro, in the
first place?
