Changing machine.
XP Pro on old machine and XP Home on new.
What is the best way to upgrade new machine to Pro?
I have tried using the xp pro cd but am told that setup cannot continue
because the version on the new pc is newer than the version on the cd.

First, you must remove XP Pro from your old computer's
hard drive by reformatting the drive.

Next, you'll need to make a SP2 slipstreamed version of your
current Windows XP Pro and then upgrade using the new CD.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)

First - confirm your copy of Windows XP Professional that is installed on
the "old machine" can transfer to the new machine.. It has to be a
retail/upgrade version and not an OEM version. If it came pre-installed on
the "old machine" or when you got it - it was simply in a paper CD case
wrapped in cellophane with cardboard backing - that is an OEM version.
Following the guidelines of the EULA (End User License Agreement) - an OEM
install is "attached" to the first machine it is installed upon and cannot
be moved to another machine under any circumstances.

Second - as you have tried to upgrade and it gave you the warning about
"version on the machine is newer than that on the CD" - you must have
aretail/upgrade version. This is good. The message means your Home version
has SP2, the XP Pro CD is not at that level. You should look into
"AutoStreamer" and bring your CD up to that level. Then try again.

Don't forget to remove (Format) the Windows XP Professional from the old
machine.
