XP Home to XP Pro upgrade

We are attempting to upgrade College Student's XP Home
machines to XP Pro - we have a Campus License agreement
with MS. We are having a lot of failed upgrades - BSODs,
locking up, etc. Searching the Knowledge Base doesnt
return too much but I found 1 article that says you can
not upgrade XP Home SP1 to XP Pro without SP1. Is there a
version of XP Pro with SP1 or do we need to somehow remove
SP1 from XP Home, upgrade to XP Pro and then apply SP1
again?
Any idea what MS means by that?

It would be much easier and quicker if you slipstreamed SP1 into a
Windows XP Pro CD and then performed an upgrade
over XP Home Edition w/SP1.

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Create Bootable CD
