How do I upgrade from XP Home Edition to XP Professional?
How much does it cost? Is it worth the cost and trouble?

Should one expect any serious software and/or driver
conflicts or shortcomings due to the XP Pro upgrade --
assuming the previously installed XP Home Edition is
totally ship-shape with all the latest updates?

Please reply to (e-mail address removed).

Thank you!

Home to Pro upgrade is easy. Buy the XP Pro retail Upgrade kit. Prices
vary, depending on local currency and store policy.

Since Home is working, Pro should not have any problems. Just un-install
anti-virus and firewalls first. Disconnect from the Internet during the
upgrade.

Yves is right, but if you have only a domestic PC, I suggest it's a waste of
money. Home will do all, and more, than you are ever likely to need.

There is no special upgrade version just for this, but the
regular XP Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't
say so on the box).

How much does it cost?

Around $100 or a little more

Is it worth the cost and trouble?

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

This is among the easiest and most likely successful of all
possible upgrades. However there are no guarantees that it always
works perfectly. However unlikely, it's always possible that
something might go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure
you have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose before
beginning.

Put in the XP Pro CD and let the setup run. It's quite straightforward.
Take backups first.

The answer to this depends on *why* you are considering the upgrade. If
you do not need the specific items supported in XP Pro (like ability to join
a domain and encryption), then the answer is 'No'. If you do need them,
the answer is 'yes'.

As the two versions are almost identical, there should not be any issues in
these areas. However, all the updates will be lost with the upgrade
install and will need to be re-applied.

The central system in the two is exactly the same, and you will only
need Pro if you have real, observed *need* for one of the extra
facilities which Pro has. See for example
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp

You would need the Pro Upgrade version - which is about $150

You didn't make it clear that you were talking about the
Academic version, which has a more restrictive license
than the regular retail version.

No, I didn't, because I didn't realize it myself. ;-) I just had
done a quick Google search and found a site with low prices. Only
now, when you pointed it out, did I actually go to the individual
sites themselves and realize that what you said was true.

I'm clearly wrong about the retail version price. I must have
thinking about the XP Home upgrade price. Sorry.
