XP Home Startup Anomalies

I am running Windows XP Home SP2, which is fully updated, and have two
things happening during startup that should not be:

1. Immediately after POST, a "One of your disks needs to be checked" Windows
always opens and refers to the same drive every time. This drive has been
checked many times now and chkdsk reports no errors every time it is
checked, but the window continues to appear.

2. After the desktop appears, a Windows Explorer windows opens with an
application folder in it. This window is under Start Menu/Programs, but is
not in the Startup group.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Jim

Hi Jim,

What Anti-Virus Software Package is installed? View your Events Logs and
see if you are getting any errors at Shutdown. What program appears to be
opening up? Are you running a Windows Registry Cleaner?

You asked:

What Anti-Virus Software Package is installed?
Grisoft AVG Anti-virus Free Edition.

View your Events Logs and see if you are getting any errors at Shutdown.
Using Event Viewer, System, I have these recurring Errors:

1. "ntfs", The file system structure is corrupt and unusable. Please run the
chkdsk utility on volume _.

2. "Service Control Manager", The mrtRate service failed to start due to the
following error: The system cannot find the file specified.

3. Windows Defender is detecting my Wireless Adapter configuration utility
as spyware.

Which specific .log file should I be searching? I have over 200 .log files.

What program appears to be opening up?
It appears to be a leftover install folder called WordPerfect 12 Setup,
which I assume is being displayed by Windows Explorer. The path is
D:\Program Files\WordPerfect\WordPerfect Office 12 Setup, and clicking the
"Up" incon on the toolbar eventually gets to "My Computer".

Are you running a Windows Registry Cleaner?
Yes, Norton WinDoctor in SystemWorks, and RegCleaner, a shareware
application.
