getting rid of something at startup

I'm using Windows XP Home edition.
Recently, I was going to download a program from the web, but I changed my
mind. I said cancel before it was finished downloading.
Now, however, every time I boot-up my computer a window pops up asking me if
I wanted to continue downloading (or running) the same program. I went into
the Run menu and said "msconfig". Under the Startup tab I can see an entry
with the program's name.
I tried to remove that item by un-checking it. But the computer does not
like that because when I re-boot it goes into the
selective startup or diagnostic startup mode and asks me to undo the change
I made.

How do I get rid of that window popping up every time I boot-up. I think
there is also an entry in my registry. Do I need to go to
my autoexec.bat file and make changes there? How do I do that?

Thanks,
Please let me know if you need further information about my situation.

It's going into Selective Startup mode because it IS a selective start up.
Just click 'do not show this again' and drive on. Good luck!

Download this program from Microsoft.

AutoRuns for Windows v8.61
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

Once you've extracted the files from the zip file, launch
Autoruns.exe.
In Autoruns, click on the Logon tab.
Remove the check mark from the box next to the item you want to
prevent launching at startup.
Restart you computer to see if the problem is fixed.
If so, go back to Autoruns and right click on the problem entry
and select Delete from the menu.

FYI, it helps to include as much information as possible when
you post a question. For instance, a link to the site or at
least the name of the program you were trying to download would
have been helpful. When I come across a question such as yours,
I try to duplicate the problem on my test system.

Good luck

Nepatsfan...
I have followed the instructions. They are the same as those within
the compiled help file (*.chm) that arrives when you unzip
autoruns.zip. I am running a Thinkpad R40, Windows XP, SP2,
all recent updates. Windows Task Manager (ctrl+shft+exc) indicates
that ibmmessages.exe is a running process.
(C:\Program Files\IBM\Messages By IBM\ibmmessages.exe)
This file is listed under the startup tab of msconfig.
This is the first time I have tried to use autoruns.exe.
I chose to practice using ibmmessages.exe since it is non-essential.
When I re-booted, ibmmessages.exe is still listed under the
Windows Task Manager.

I would appreciate a suggestion.
Tnx,
Charles

I can't speak for your specific computer since I've never
worked on a ThinkPad, but it's been my experience that when a
startup entry keeps showing up, even when you think it's
disabled, there are two likely causes. The first would be some
sort of malware. I don't think that is the case with your
system. The second would be a setting within a program
installed on your laptop that launches the application at
startup.

Check for some sort of utility installed by the manufacturer to
deliver alerts and updates. Look for a setting to turn off this
feature. You might want to check the documentation for your
laptop or the Lenovo web site for more information concerning
this issue.

If you're unable to resolve the problem, you might want to post
your question in a new thread.

Good luck
