xp home sp1share windows 98 won't access

I have a windows xp home machine with the c drive shared
and I can't get a windows 98 machine to access the share
properly. Here is what I've done.

1. Setup both machines on the same network ok and they can
both be seen from the same workgroup in either my network
places\network neighbourhood
2. Setup the c drive share to allow network users to
change files. Setup the windows 98 network logon user
details as a new user with full access on the xp home sp1
machine.
3. Made sure all firewalls are switched off

The exact problem I get is that when accessing the share
from the windows 98 machine its asks for a password. Not a
username and password but just a password. I've tried
entering various things but no luck. I even enabled the
guest account but still no luck. Any ideas?

Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Home to fully enable file sharing.
That's often all that's needed to fix the problem.

If that doesn't fix it, make sure that the Guest account is enabled
for network access by other computers. Type this command in the Start
| Run box and then click OK:

net user guest /active:yes

If that doesn't fix it, remove any network password from the Guest
account:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
3. Click Guest.
4. Click Reset Password.
5. Click OK without entering a new password.

XP Home uses the Guest account for all networked access. There should
be no need to create any other user accounts on XP Home. Enabling or
disabling the Guest account in Control Panel | User Accounts has no
effect on networking -- it determines whether someone can log in as
Guest from the local keyboard.
