XP Home running very slow

My friend's system is running extremely slow and sometimes cannot even use
Outlook Express. I printed out every document you had about checking out
viruses, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal, defrag, Norton anti-virus, --
you name it and still extremely slow

I just don't know what else to try. She does not have a lot of files or
applications on the system. The hard drive is pretty free.

Can anybody recommend what else I can try. All the above noted no errors
but know there is as takes forever to boot up and that is not even going
online
