XP HOME RE-INSTALLATION

Installed XP Home. Several months later system crashed.
Asked for reinstallation of some files. Tried this and did
not work. Is there a way to re-install XP Home over the
existing installation and NOT lose all info and files on
system. Recovery console doesn't seem to work.
