Hi folks

I have XP home installed on my laptop and have an option on XP pro. Is it
worth it?

Some of the nicer enhancements in XP Pro is that it has added security
and networking features, so if that appeals to you, then go for it.

It very much depends if you need the features that it
gives you.
Have a look at the product overview here to see if you
need the more advanced features.

I'd suggest that you don't need it, it only offers some
technical features, like a web server, that you either
will need or don't.

Barry:

If some of the following will be useful to you, then get XP Pro.

Some things that Home does not have/support (that Pro does):
Ability to disable Simple File Sharing
Local group policy
gpedit.msc
ComputerMgmt: Local Users and Groups
ASR (Automatic System Recovery)
Client Service for Netware
Dynamic disks
Encrypted file system
Drive/folder/File level access control in normal GUI mode (does have it via
SafeMode)
IIS
Multi-processor support
NT/Win2k/Win2k3 domain membership
Power User gp
Offline files
Remote desktop hosting
tasklist cmd
systeminfo cmd

And Home cannot create user groups.

Also, Home is limited to 5 concurrent inbound connections, whereas Pro is
limited to 10

That depends entirely on whether its extra features are valuable
to *you*.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Greetings --

The two versions are identical when it comes to stability, and
device driver and software application compatibility, but are intended
to meet different functionality, networking, security, and ease-of-use
needs, in different environments. The most significant differences
are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network
connections while WinXP Home only allows only 5, WinXP Pro is designed
to join a Microsoft domain while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro
supports file encryption and IIS.

"Which is better?" That depends entirely upon the uses to which
you put your computer, the network environment in which you'll operate
it, your specific security needs, and your level of computer
knowledge.

For a laptop, that is essentially for you alone, the only thing I think
that might be useful is if you need to connect into an office network
and 'join a domain' there. That is supported only by Pro. Good general
list is at
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will support ten
simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five. Unless you see
something there which you realise that you *need* I'd stick with Home
