I just got an Acer Inspire One and it locks up on the beginning screen "To
begin click your user name". I've tried everything I can think of including
safe mode. Same thing happens. Worse yet there are no disks with the
computer so I can't even reinstall. Help please!

You apparently haven't tried what you should have tried: contact Acer
support.

You should be able to reinstall it. Check with the place you bought it;
the law says a method of recovery must be provided with every computer,
new or used.

Isn't it F12 or ALT-F12 or something like that to initiate the reinstall
sequence? Check your paperwork or visit the mfr's web site or call them
or write them.

Describe exactly the steps you perform that causes the lockuip and
exactly what you see/hear when it locks up. If there's any error
message, quote it in its entirety. Be precise.

A reinstall will likely take care of the problem. Or, you may need
warranty work; who knows?

I downloaded one of the user manuals for Aspire One, and this is copied
from that manual.

I want to restore my computer to its original settings without recovery CDs.

Note: D2D Recovery is only available in notebook models fitted with a hard drive.

Note: If your system is the multilingual version, the operating
system and language you choose when you first turn on the
system will be the only option for future recovery operations.

This recovery process helps you restore the C: drive with the original software
content that is installed when you purchase your notebook. Follow the steps
below to rebuild your C: drive. (Your C: drive will be reformatted and all data
will be erased.) It is important to back up all data files before using this option.
Before performing a restore operation, please check the BIOS settings.

1 Check to see if Acer disk-to-disk recovery is enabled or not.
2 Make sure the D2D Recovery setting in Main is Enabled.
3 Exit the BIOS utility and save changes. The system will reboot.

Note: To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during POST.

To start the recovery process:

1 Restart the system.
2 While the Acer logo is showing, press <Alt> + <F10> at the same time to
enter the recovery process.
3 Refer to the onscreen instructions to perform system recovery.
Important! This feature occupies 6 GB in a hidden partition on
your hard disk.

*******

So if you had a flash drive, an SSD or something, they may not have
placed a recovery partition on it. The above says a recovery partition
is provided, if the main storage is via a hard drive.

If you got the thing new, then chances are, what is on the recovery
partition, is the same as what is on C:. If the computer is used,
someone may have installed their own OS, in which case using
the recovery partition, is going to recover whatever Acer provided
there. So if the unit shipped with Linux, and the previous owner
installed WinXP, then the recovery operation would put Linux back.

It would help to understand the history of the machine, to understand
what is going to happen if the <alt> <f10> option is supported,
enabled, and used.

Paul
