" TO BEGIN CLICK ON USER NAME" keeps coming back...

B

bent

Using XP home, sp2, all updates, single computer, single user, not on
network.

This just started a few days ago.

When I boot, I get a light blue screen with the "Win logo icon" and
"user icon", and message " TO BEGIN CLICK ON USER NAME"

I go to Tweak UI, LOGON, AUTOLOGON, check "LOG ON AUTOMATICALLY AT
SYSTEM STARTUP". Click APPLY and OK. (SET PASSWORD, not checked)

Next time I boot, it goes straight to desktop like I want it to.

But after 2 to 4 times turning computer off and back on at various times
of day, when I boot the computer, I get the " TO BEGIN CLICK ON USER
NAME" again and have to click on USER NAME to get my normal desktop.

This happened to me a few months back and using Tweak UI, I checked
"LOG ON AUTOMATICALLY AT SYSTEM STARTUP" and that corrected the problem
until now.

I am NOT changing anything, not downloading anything, not installing
anything.

This has happened 6 times in past couple days, any ideas what is causing
this? Why would the computer do this the first time and why does it keep
coming back?

Thanks

Bent

You do not need TweakUI for automatic logon.

Do not use control userpasswords2 to create accounts if you are using XP
Home!!!

[[You can also use turn on automatic logon without editing the registry in
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft Windows XP Professional
on a computer that is not joined to a domain. To do this, follow these
steps:

1. Click Start and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2 and then click OK.

Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window
in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed.
Additionally, users receive the following error message:

Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to see
that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not exist, you must
reinstall it.

3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to
close the User Accounts window. ]]

Thanks for the reply Wesley.

Under USER ACCOUNTS, User must enter a user name and password to use the
compter. The box was checked and I wonder why. I did not set up the
computer to require a password.

I unchecked it and clicked APPLY. I do not want a password to log on.

Under USERS for this computer are 3 entries...
1. Administrator
2. ASPNET
3. user

I never heard of ASPNET, what is it and how did it get on my computer?

IS THIS MS SPYWARE???

Can I safely remove it and not screw up the computer?

Thanks a lot.

I uninstalled it using USERS ACCOUNT and that really messed up the
booting of my computer.

LOCKED up computer at the "Windows is Starting screen".

Got in SAFE mode and did a System Restore and have it back.

I will leave it alone for now.

Thanks again Wesley
